VINEYARDS

The Tokaj Wine Region is located in the north-eastern part of Hungary, on almost 5,500 hectares. Its volcanic origin makes it possible to make rich and complex wines.

Plots with diverse geological appearance (dacite, andesite and rhyolite) produce wines typical of excellent growing sites, i.e. ‘vineyard wines’. This is the first closed wine region in the world (1737), and even today protected wines of protected origin are produced here. Since 2002, Tokaj has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a historic cultural landscape.

Our estate covers 19 hectares in 12 vineyards and three villages: in Tarcal: Szil-völgy, Bige, Deák, Barát, Bajusz, Dobai and Lestár; in Bodrogkeresztúr: Kastély, Dereszla and Medve; and in Mád, Bomboly and Szent Tamás.

Following the principles of sustainable farming, the Gizella Winery cultivates its vineyards in accordance with the agricultural environmental management programme.

Our cultivated grape varieties with plantations up until 2021 include 62% Furmint, 31% Hárslevelű and 7% Yellow Muscatel, which are the traditional grape varieties of the wine region.

One of the priority projects of the winery is the reconstruction of the Szil-völgy vineyard in Tarcal and its communication. The first mention of the vineyard dates back to 1612. The winery continues the story from 2009 with the purchase and replanting of the plots. The terraces dreamed of with Furmint grapes are also a place for wine tastings.
